Baron: Black Hills (7.2001)
The family vacation continued in the Black Hills,
which are located in the southwest corner of
South Dakota.
Mount Rushmore
is probably the most famous tourist attraction in this
region.

The details
of the massive sculpture can be viewed when one
approaches the monument.
Next, we visited
Custer state park,
which has many attractions.

The needle district
has interesting rock formations, which are of
volcanic origin.

The "eye in the needle"
is an interesting formation that combines
several needle structures.

My father and sister
were compelled to sit down and enjoy the scenery.

Bighorn sheep
often frequent the roads around the park.

But the BIG attraction
is the buffalo herd.

There are lots of them,
as can be seen here.
Unfortunately, the camera didn't catch some of their
more intimate activities...

But the small critters,
in this case a prairie dog,
are also popular.

Rattlesnakes also live in the park.
In this case, a visitor was walking around
barefoot (!) when he almost stepped on the
poor reptile. Fortunately, the ranger responded quickly.
